Abstract

Cellular therapy is quickly becoming an integral part of transfusion medicine practice. Therefore, transfusion medicine professionals are required to be familiar with the practice of manufacturing therapeutic cellular products for clinical use. This chapter is designed with practical questions allowing for comprehension of the fundamental knowledge and important clinical issues in cellular therapy. The topics covered by this chapter include evaluating the manufacturing of various hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) products, reviewing the donor eligibility/suitability for HPCs collections, and also understanding the unique challenges of HPC mobilization/collection. The chapter also provides relevant clinical scenarios, such as specific transfusion support for patients receiving HPC transplantation with ABO-incompatible stem cell graft. Last, the chapter highlights the relevant FDA regulations that are critical in the field of cellular therapy.
