Abstract
Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) is a medical specialty, which uses a multidisciplinary approach to maximize quality of life and improve function. Coordinated care of the rheumatologic patient should co-exist between the medical and rehabilitation teams. The goals of rehabilitation are to alleviate pain, prevent joint deformity, conserve energy, and restore and/or maintain function. Rest, exercise, physical modalities, and orthoses are treatment options to reduce pain and improve function. Assistive and adaptive devices, as well as home and environmental modifications, can improve activities of daily living and facilitate integration within the community. Patient-centered comprehensive care, including education, is essential to help patients achieve their individual goals.
