Abstract

Reproductive psychiatry, also known as perinatal psychiatry, focuses on the treatment of mental health disorders related to reproduction. Providing psychiatric treatment during pregnancy and postpartum requires a specialized knowledge of the relationship between the reproductive cycle and mental health. Issues related to malpractice within reproductive psychiatry include informed consent for reproductive decisions such as abortion and permanent contraception; psychiatric hospitalization during the perinatal period, including the use of seclusion and restraints; prescribing psychiatric medications to women during pregnancy and postpartum; abandonment or failure to treat women in pregnancy or postpartum; and dual agency in parenting or custody evaluations.
